Dato’ Haji Sukri began his legal career with the Judicial and Legal Services prior to his practise in 1985. He has served as a Magistrate in Kuala Lumpur (1979), Negeri Sembilan (1979-1982) and Kelantan (1982-1984). Dato’ Sukri specialises in Criminal, Civil Litigation as well as corporate and has over 28 years of experience in law.

 

His immense experience does not confine to law only as he was involved in politics for more than 10 years where he won both the elections in 1990 and 1995 for the Parliament of Kok Lanas and Machang, Kelantan respectively representing the UMINO Semangat 46 Party. As a Member of Parliament, he played an active role in facilitating the debate of Parliament Bills since 1990 albeit being an opposition. The Immunity of the Malay Rulers, Education Act, Anti-Corruption Act and Bills of the annual Budget were among those which he has debated when he was an MP in Parliament.

 

Being a forceful speaker in the Parliament has led him to several countries where he has represented Malaysia in the Asean Inter-Parliament Organisation’s Conference (AIPO) in Kuala Lumpur, Jakarta, Manila, Singapore, Phuket and others. He had also represented Malaysia in the conference organized by the Member of Parliaments of Asia Pacific held in Taiwan in 1998, Member of Parliaments’ Conference on Bosnia Herzegovina held in Brussels, Belgium, IPU Conference in Geneva, Members of Parliament’s Islamic Conference in Tehran, Iran as well as participating in a visit to United Nations, New York.


His political career ended in 1999 and in 2001 he ventured into the corporate world as the Chairman of Amanah Raya Berhad (ARB). His appointment as the Chairman was to scrutinize and execute the trust deeds of Permodalan Nasional Berhad (PNB) and other trust companies in Malaysia as ARB is a trustee to them. Apart from that, he was required to monitor the administration of the estate conducted by the ARB as well as supervising the administration of ARB on behalf of the Board of Directors.


Dato’ Sukri is no stranger to Kelantan people whether as a criminal lawyer or as a politician and as a result, the Sultan of Kelantan Darulnaim, Sultan Ismail Petra Ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Yahya Petra has awarded him with Justice of Peace (JP) of Kelantan in 1992 as well as Darjah Kebesaran Jiwa Mahkota Kelantan (DJMK) which carries the title of Dato’. He is the President of Majlis Jaksa Pendamai for the state of Kelantan since 1993 till now and he was the Chairman of Kelantan State Bar as well as Committee member of the Malaysian Bar Council from 2006-2007, 2007-2008 and 2008-2009. In 2007, he was elected by the then YAA Tun Fairuz Chief Justice of Malaysia as a member of the Advocates and Solicitors’ Disciplinary Board.


Dato’ Sukri is still committed in practice where a major part of his cases now are criminal base and that he is also a member of Kelantan State Service Commission, a member of State Succession Council and in October, 2010, he was appointed as Secretary to the Yayasan Sultan Kelantan Darulnaim Berdaftar, a charitable foundation established under the Trustees’ Incorporation Act, 1952 to help people of Kelantan as well as Malaysia as a whole.
